In the sequel to The Anarchist, Bert and his vaudeville company travel to a little town in California called Hollywood where it's said they can make motion pictures without interference from Thomas Edison's thugs. But the shadow of New York is hard to shake. When the owners responsible for the Triangle Shirtwaist fire are cleared of all charges just like those at the Iroquois Theater, Adeline's posttraumatic stress returns. To cope with it, she takes laudanum and soon becomes addicted.
Trevor thinks what she needs is marriage and family to occupy her. But is that what Addie really wants? A family is something you lose in a tragedy. "I'm not ready for that," she tells him, "And I feel such a kinship for the suffragists. Why can't women have jobs like men instead of raising children?" Nevertheless, Trevor lures her overseas to meet his own family, when the past catches up with him.
Unknown the Trevor, the police are waiting for him in England. If he can't shake them, he could be hanged or spend the rest of his life in prison. His only option might be to flee to New York again on the only ship available: the Titanic.
